Massey has been a leading light in critical health psychology. From small beginnings, activities focused on critical health psychology in New Zealand have grown significantly.
From the 1990s onwards, Massey University's School of Psychology became a ‘cradle of the critical approach’ [1], with action research projects, critical psychology theorising, critical approaches to feminism, and, of course, the Critical Health Psychology programme.
In 2020, our programme celebrated its 30-year milestone!
Programme founders: Chris Stephens, Kerry Chamberlain, and Antonia Lyons
The programme was started by Kerry Chamberlain, Antonia Lyons, and Chris Stephens, three of the best scholars in the world in their fields. They have written an article about the history of the field in the country, Critical health psychology in New Zealand: Developments, directions and reflections, which you can read here.
Continuing this legacy, the programme continues to attract top scholars, including: Tracy Morison (2016-present), Sarah Riley (2019-present), Andrea Lamarre (2019-2023), and Gareth Terry (2023).
